Sabah is one of the best places in Southeast Asia for rainforest and wildlife experiences. Travellers visit Sabah to explore ancient rainforests, join river safaris, spot rare animals, and stay deep inside protected jungle reserves. For travellers who want more than a short nature trip, this 8D7N Sabah Wildlife Adventure Experience combines several of Sabah’s top wildlife destinations into one complete itinerary.
This tour takes guests through Sepilok, Kinabatangan River, Danum Valley, and Tabin Wildlife Reserve. Each location offers a different rainforest environment and wildlife experience. From orangutans and sun bears to hornbills, proboscis monkeys, and pygmy elephants, this journey is designed for travellers who want to experience Borneo’s natural side.
The itinerary combines jungle lodges, guided river cruises, rainforest trekking, night walks, and wildlife observation activities with experienced local nature guides. Guests also stay in well-known conservation areas that are important for wildlife protection and rainforest research in Sabah.
For nature lovers, photographers, birdwatchers, and travellers interested in rainforest ecosystems, this Sabah wildlife package offers one of the most complete Borneo wildlife experiences available.
Why Choose an 8D7N Sabah Wildlife Tour?
Many travellers only visit one wildlife area in Sabah due to limited time. However, wildlife sightings and rainforest environments can vary greatly depending on location. This 8-day itinerary allows travellers to explore multiple ecosystems across Sabah’s east coast.
Sepilok is known for orangutan rehabilitation and rainforest education. Kinabatangan River offers one of the best river wildlife experiences in Malaysia. Danum Valley is famous for its untouched primary rainforest, while Tabin Wildlife Reserve combines lowland rainforest, mud volcanoes, waterfalls, and wildlife tracking opportunities.
By combining these destinations into one tour, guests experience a wider range of wildlife habitats and improve their chances of seeing different animal species throughout the trip.
This itinerary is also suitable for travellers who prefer organised logistics. Transfers, accommodation, meals, river transport, and guided activities are arranged throughout the journey, allowing guests to focus on the travel experience itself.
Day 1: Arrival in Sandakan
The adventure begins in Sandakan, a gateway to many of Sabah’s wildlife destinations. Upon arrival at Sandakan Airport, guests transfer to MyNature Resort in Sepilok.
Sepilok is one of Sabah’s best-known rainforest areas and is located near several important conservation centres. The resort itself is surrounded by rainforest, allowing guests to immediately experience Sabah’s jungle environment.
One of the highlights during the first evening is the guided night walk around the resort area. Night walks in Sabah offer a completely different rainforest experience compared to daytime activities. Guests may encounter frogs, insects, flying squirrels, sleeping birds, and other nocturnal species depending on weather and forest conditions.
The resort is also located near the Rainforest Discovery Centre, a popular location for birdwatching and canopy walkway experiences.
Starting the tour in Sepilok gives travellers time to adjust to Sabah’s tropical rainforest environment before continuing deeper into Borneo’s wildlife regions.
Day 2 – Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and Kinabatangan River
The second day begins with a visit to the famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Established in 1964, the centre plays an important role in rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned and injured orangutans before releasing them back into the wild.
Visitors can observe orangutans during feeding sessions and view younger orangutans at the nursery area. For many travellers, this becomes one of the most memorable wildlife encounters in Sabah.
Nearby, guests also visit the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. The centre focuses on the conservation and rehabilitation of the world’s smallest bear species, the sun bear. Visitors learn about the threats facing wild sun bears and ongoing conservation efforts in Borneo.
After the Sepilok visits, the journey continues to Kinabatangan River via boat transfer to Abai Jungle Lodge.
The Kinabatangan River is one of the most important wildlife areas in Sabah. The river ecosystem supports a large variety of wildlife species, including proboscis monkeys, macaques, crocodiles, hornbills, orangutans, and Bornean pygmy elephants.
In the late afternoon, guests join a river cruise along the Kinabatangan River. Wildlife activity is often high during this period as animals move closer to riverbanks before sunset.
Night cruises and guided night walks are also included. During evening activities, guests may spot nocturnal animals and experience the rainforest atmosphere after dark.
Day 3: Oxbow Lake and River Cruising
You start early on Day 3 with a morning cruise to Pitas Oxbow Lake. An oxbow lake forms when a river bends sharply and eventually cuts off, leaving a curved lake behind. These lakes are rich in wildlife because they attract animals looking for water and fish. In the morning, birds are most active, so bring binoculars.
After the morning cruise, you return to the lodge for a jungle breakfast at an open-air platform if weather allows. This meal gives you a chance to rest and ask your guide questions about what you’ve seen so far.
In the mid-morning, you take another boat ride upriver to Sukau, where you’ll check in to Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge. This lodge is slightly larger than Abai and sits higher up the river. You’ll have free time in the afternoon to relax by the swimming pool or rest in your room.
The evening follows the same pattern as the previous day, a river cruise in late afternoon and then dinner. River cruises are so effective for wildlife viewing that the tour operator runs them twice daily. Each cruise may show you different animals because the river is long and various species are active at different times.
Day 4 – Journey Into Danum Valley Conservation Area
Day 4 involves a long overland journey from Kinabatangan to Danum Valley. You’ll drive about 2.5 hours from Kinabatangan to Lahad Datu, then another 2.5 hours into Danum Valley Conservation Area.
During this drive, you’ll notice the landscape changing. The areas closer to the towns have regenerating forest, meaning trees that have grown back after logging. As you move deeper into Danum Valley, the forest becomes increasingly dense and untouched. Danum Valley is one of the most important rainforest research areas in Southeast Asia because it contains forests that have never been logged.
When you arrive, you’ll register at the field centre and receive a briefing from the staff about how to behave in the rainforest and what animals you might encounter. After lunch in the dining hall, you’ll have a chat with your nature guide to plan your activities for the next two days.
You have a few hours to rest before the afternoon walk. This short walk around the centre serves as an introduction to the rainforest environment and how to move quietly and observe animals. Even this short walk often yields sightings of monkeys, hornbills, and deer if you’re patient.
Day 5: Full Day at Danum Valley
A full day in Danum Valley allows you to experience one of the oldest rainforests in the world more deeply.
Morning walks begin early when rainforest activity is at its peak. The forest atmosphere during sunrise is one of the most unique parts of the Danum Valley experience. Misty rainforest trails, bird calls, and fresh jungle air create a completely different environment from urban travel destinations.
You can explore several trails around the field centre depending on weather conditions and your fitness level.
Danum Valley is home to numerous mammal species including orangutans, clouded leopards, civets, mouse deer, and flying squirrels. Although rare species are difficult to spot, the rainforest supports an impressive range of wildlife.
The area is also one of Sabah’s top birdwatching destinations. Hornbills, trogons, broadbills, and other rainforest birds are commonly recorded in the area.
In addition to wildlife, Danum Valley offers an educational experience about tropical rainforest ecosystems, forest conservation, and biodiversity research.
Evening and night activities continue after dinner with guided walks in search of nocturnal wildlife.
Day 6: Danum Valley to Tabin Wildlife Reserve
On Day 6, you have an early choice. You can either wake at 4:30 AM for a 4×4 drive to Bukit Atur to watch the sunrise, or you can wake at 6 AM for a final morning walk with your guide. Most people choose the sunrise drive because it’s a unique experience to watch the sun rise over an untouched rainforest valley.
After breakfast, you check out and begin your journey to Tabin Wildlife Reserve, another 1.5 hours away. When you arrive at Tabin, you’ll check into a timber lodge with a private balcony. The lodge sits beside the Lipad River within the rainforest.
Your afternoon activity is visiting the Lipad Mud Volcano. This is an active mud volcano where mineral-rich mud bubbles up from underground. The area is important for wildlife because animals come to eat the mineral salts in the mud. You’ll trek through the rainforest for about 20 minutes to reach it.
At the mud volcano, you can see animal footprints in the bare area and try the volcanic mud yourself if you wish. Some people believe the mud is good for skin, though there is no scientific proof. The trek back to the lodge follows an elephant trail, which means you’re walking on a path that elephants have used repeatedly.
After dinner, you’ll watch a presentation about Tabin’s wildlife and conservation, followed by a night safari. Night safaris in a vehicle are often more relaxing than walks, especially if you’re tired from the day’s activities.
Day 7: Birds, Waterfall, and Night Safari
Day 7 starts with an early morning bird walk. Tabin has more than 300 bird species, making it one of the best birdwatching locations in Sabah. If you’re interested in birds, bring binoculars and a bird identification guide.
After breakfast, you take a drive through the core area for animal spotting and photography. This drive covers areas you couldn’t reach on foot the previous day.
The main activity for the morning is a trek to Lipad Waterfall. You’ll walk through lush rainforest to reach the waterfall. Once there, you can swim in the natural pool or simply rest under the trees. A refreshing shower under the waterfall is a nice reward after the walk.
In the afternoon, you return to the lodge. Your guide will offer you a Tabin rainforest foot soak. This involves soaking your feet in a blend of natural herbs meant to relax tired muscles after the jungle walks.
In the evening, you’ll take a dusk drive to look for animals that come out as the sun sets. After dinner, there’s another night walk, giving you a final chance to spot nocturnal wildlife before your last day.
Day 8: Departure
Your final day is relaxed. You have breakfast and then free time until check-out. If you’re interested, you can take a dawn drive or jungle walk to spot more animals. Otherwise, you can rest and pack your belongings.
After checkout, you’ll be driven to Lahad Datu Airport for your flight home. Lunch is provided before you leave.
Wildlife That You May Encounter During the Tour
One of the biggest reasons travellers choose this itinerary is the opportunity to observe wildlife across different rainforest habitats.
Commonly spotted wildlife species may include:
- Orangutans
- Proboscis monkeys
- Long-tailed macaques
- Silver leaf monkeys
- Hornbills
- Crocodiles
- Monitor lizards
- Bornean pygmy elephants
- Civets
- Flying squirrels
- Deer species
- Kingfishers
- Sun bears
Wildlife sightings always depend on weather, season, and natural conditions. However, combining Sepilok, Kinabatangan, Danum Valley, and Tabin in one itinerary significantly improves wildlife viewing opportunities.
Travellers who enjoy photography, birdwatching, and rainforest exploration often consider this type of itinerary one of the best ways to experience Sabah.

The 8D7N package costs RM 10,725 per adult for a minimum of two people. Here’s what’s covered:
All transfers between Sandakan Airport, lodges, and Lahad Datu Airport are included. You don’t need to arrange transport yourself.
Accommodation is provided in double or twin rooms. You’ll stay at MY Nature Resort (1 night), Abai Jungle Lodge (1 night), Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge (1 night), Danum Valley Field Centre (2 nights), and Tabin Wildlife Resort (2 nights).
Meals are mostly included. Breakfast is provided every day except Day 1. Lunch and dinner are included every day except Day 1, when only dinner is provided, and Day 8, when only breakfast and lunch are provided. This gives you flexibility on your arrival and departure days.
All activities mentioned in the itinerary are included. This covers river cruises, jungle walks, night walks, and entrance fees to wildlife centres.
What You Need to Bring
Pack appropriate clothing for the rainforest. Lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and long pants protect your skin from insects and sun. Pack one set of quick-dry clothes for activities near water.
Bring good walking shoes with ankle support. The rainforest paths are sometimes muddy and uneven, and proper footwear prevents slips and twisted ankles.
Sun protection is essential: sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. The sun at midday is intense, and reflective surfaces near water increase UV exposure.
Insect repellent is important. Bring a strong mosquito repellent and leech socks if you’re hiking during wet months. Leech socks are tubes of cloth that you wear over your lower legs and feet. They prevent leeches from reaching your skin.
Binoculars are useful for bird and animal spotting. A camera or smartphone is essential for photography, but bring a waterproof bag for protection during boat rides.
Pack personal medications, a basic first aid kit, and any toiletries the lodges don’t provide.
Is This Tour Right for You
This tour requires a reasonable level of fitness. You’ll walk for several hours each day on uneven forest paths. Some walks are easy, but others climb steep terrain. If you have joint problems or limited mobility, discuss this with the tour operator before booking.
You should be comfortable with wildlife and the rainforest environment. Insects are common. Leeches are a possibility during wet months. Large animals like elephants and crocodiles live in these areas, though dangerous encounters are extremely rare.
The tour moves to a new location every day or two, so you don’t stay in one place for long. If you prefer a slower pace with more time to settle into one area, you might want a shorter version of this tour.
