The term “via ferrata” originating from Italian, directly translates to “Iron Road”. It refers to mountain routes equipped with permanent cables, ladders, and bridges. Sabah’s Via Ferrata, at 3,800m above sea level, stands as the highest in the world and Asia’s sole via ferrata, clinging to the slopes of Mount Kinabalu‘s less-traveled paths. There is no prior experience in rock climbing or mountaineering experience is necessary, yet a head for heights, moderate stamina, and a spirit of adventure are important.
There are several routes available to meet various climbers’ skills and degrees of endurance. The Walk the Torq circuit offers beginner-friendly route alongside the more demanding or challenging Low’s Peak circuit, tailored for intermediate-level adventurers with above-average fitness level.
The Low’s Peak Circuit is a Via Ferrata path located at 3,776 metres above sea level, making it the world’s highest via ferrata circuit. If you have already climbed Mount Kinabalu before, you absolutely should do it again so you can try The Low’s Peak Circuit!
This three- to four-hour route with an optional summit attempt is designed for the courageous and energetic individual with above-average fitness levels. It includes rest pauses at picturesque places. The route’s thread-like tightrope walks and hanging planks are part of the pleasure!

Day 1
Your Mount Kinabalu Climb adventure begins with pick-up around 6:30 am in Kota Kinabalu (depending on accommodation and other guests) and proceeds to Kinabalu Park traversing the Crocker Range with panoramic views of the surrounding hills; the focal point of which is Mt Kinabalu.
Upon arrival at Mount Kinabalu Park Headquarters (estimated 8:30-9:00 am), collect your packed lunch and proceed to register for your Mount Kinabalu summit climb and meet your guide for the trip. After registration, you will be transferred to Timpohon Gate (1,829m), from here you will begin your climb to Pendant Hut (3,353 m), your accommodation for the evening.
Along the route to your accommodation, you will pass through four different elevation zones with notable vegetation and mammals. Keep your eye out for the famous pitcher plants or the cheeky Kinabalu Mountain shrews, endemic to Mount Kinabalu. The average time to get to Panar Laban Hostel will take about 5 hours; this may vary depending on stops and your fitness level. Around 3.30 pm, Via ferrata climbers are required to attend compulsory via Ferrata safety briefing at Pendant Hut and get to know their Mountain Torq Trainer. This safety briefing is compulsory as there will be NO repeat briefing. Climbers who failed to show via ferrata safety briefing will NOT be allowed to do Via Ferrata activity the next day. Cut off time for Via Ferrata Briefing will be at 4.00 pm.
Check into your accommodation for the evening and rest before your buffet dinner where you can enjoy the sunset from above the clouds. Once you finished, head to bed for an early night’s sleep after a long day of climbing.
