Top 10 Best Things To Do In Sabah
Sabah is genuinely blessed with gorgeous flora and fauna, rich culture and customs that have coexisted peacefully, and a diverse range of cuisines that would satisfy any palate. Here is a list of the top ten activities to do in Sabah, including Mount Kinabalu Climbing – a must-go destination
The following are some quick facts about Sabah:
- After Sarawak, Sabah is the second-largest state in Malaysia in terms of population.
- It is located on the island of Borneo and shares space with the neighbouring countries of Brunei and Indonesia.
- The Borneo Rainforest is more than 130 million years old, and the tallest tropical tree on the planet, located in Sabah, is more than 100 metres tall.
- It is the site of the world’s highest “via Ferrata,” which has been certified by Guinness World Records. You can do it after your normal Mount Kinabalu Climb.
- In Sabah, there are 35 ethnic groups that have been recognised by the government. The Chinese will be the largest non-indigenous community, and the Kadazandusun people will be the largest indigenous tribe. The Rungus, the Bajau, and the Murut are three more large ethnic groups in Sabah.
1. MOUNT KINABALU CLIMB – THE HIGHEST PEAK IN MALAYSIA
Mount Kinabalu is the highest mountain in the Malay Archipelago and the 20th most prominent mountain in the world. Mount Kinabalu and its surroundings, which are 4,095 metres above sea level, are among the most significant in the world for their diverse collection of species and internationally renowned flora and fauna.
Climbing to the top of this UNESCO World Heritage Site has traditionally been a favourite destination for visitors visiting Sabah. Which is something else you should put on your bucket list.
If you want to climb this sacred mountain and watch the golden colours of the sunrise at the summit of the mountain, you should buy your mount Kinabalu tickets months in advance because there are only a limited number of slots available each day.

2. KINABATANGAN RIVER CRUISE
The Kinabatangan River, which flows through Sandakan, has earned a reputation as one of Southeast Asia’s most important and best places to witness diverse wildlife and ecosystem.
If you are an adventurous person who wants to witness wildlife, particularly orangutans, pygmy elephants, Proboscis monkeys, and kingfishers, Kinabatangan would be the greatest place for you to visit.
3. SEPILOK ORANG UTAN REHABILITATION CENTRE
Getting up close and personal with some of the world’s most remarkable animals, such the Orang utan (which is endemic to Asia, particularly Malaysia and Indonesia), and the Borneo Sunbear, is the greatest way to see Borneo’s natural wonders.
At the Sepilok orangutan rehabilitation centre, you may observe both orang utans and Borneo sunbears, as well as learn about their habitats. This centre, which is about 25 kilometres west of Sandakan town and was established in 1964 as the first official orangutan rehabilitation centre.
4. SIPADAN NATIONAL PARK
Prepare your diving equipment and prepare to dive with schools of barracuda in a marine wonderland that is well-known among divers for its abundant underwater wildlife on Malaysia’s only oceanic island.
Among the world’s top dive destinations is Sipadan Island. You might be lucky enough to bring back some memories of diving with hammerheads, hawksbill turtles, manta rays, and whale sharks, among thousands of other species of fish.
5. CULTURAL VILLAGE
One of the best ways to understand and experience another culture is to live among the people who practice it. This, however, will not be possible in a week or two due to the fact that Sabah is made up of 35 different ethnic groups.
If you just have a few days to spend in Sabah, visiting a cultural village may be the most practical alternative available to you given your time constraints. There are a few cultural villages on the west coast of Sabah, the most notable of which are:
- Mari-Mari Cultural Village
- Monsopiad Cultural Village
- KDCA Cultural Village
6. PROBOSCIS MONKEY SANCTUARY
Visiting Sabah, particularly the East Coast of the state – which is home to magnificent creatures such as the Proboscis Monkey or long-nosed monkey – would take more than a few days.
If you want to observe proboscis monkeys but have a limited amount of time and money, you should consider visiting either the Kawa Kawa River in Kota Belud or the Klias River near Beaufort.
Because the river trip is nearly identical to those on the Kinabatangan river, some may refer to it as the “Small Kinabatangan.” The only difference between the two is the length of the river and the number of creatures that may be found in that particular area.
It’s possible to watch groups of Proboscis monkeys hopping from one tree to another, long-tailed macaques, and, if you’re fortunate enough – witness the magnificent twinning fireflies that light up the night sky.
7. TREK MALIAU BASIN – THE LOST WORLD OF SABAH
In addition to being renowned as Sabah’s Lost World, Maliau Basin is home to a diverse collection of flora and animals. Jungle trekkers and nature explorers will undoubtedly enjoy Maliau Basin, as it is an excellent location for bird viewing and the observation of spectacular wildlife (such as buffy fish owls, civets, a giant millipede, and so on).

Pulau Tiga (Survivor Island) is made famous by the reality television series Survivor: Pulau Tiga, which is shown worldwide. It is roughly 10 kilometres off the coast of Sabah’s west coast, and it may be reached by ferry from Kuala Penyu (120km from Kota Kinabalu city).
